Astaxanthin: Astaxanthin is a marine antioxidant known for its ability to help skin cope with UV exposure and dryness. Clinically, long-term supplementation has been shown to help maintain wrinkle depth, elasticity and moisture when skin is exposed to everyday environmental stress, especially sunlight.

    Science + Skin Transformation

    Overview

A 16-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study followed 65 healthy women (35–60 years) through late summer to early winter in Japan – a period when UV exposure and seasonal dryness typically worsen visible skin aging. Participants took either 6 mg astaxanthin, 12 mg astaxanthin, or placebo once daily. By the end of the study, the placebo group showed significant worsening in wrinkle parameters and skin moisture, while the astaxanthin groups did not experience this deterioration. Inflammatory markers in the outer skin layer also rose in the placebo and low-dose groups, but remained stable in the high-dose astaxanthin group.

    The Study Focus

Researchers wanted to understand how consistent astaxanthin intake could protect skin from environmentally driven damage, with a focus on:

    • UVB-induced inflammation in skin cells
    • Breakdown of collagen through matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1)
    • Real-world changes in wrinkles, elasticity and hydration over 16 weeks
In lab models, astaxanthin reduced UVB-induced inflammatory cytokines in keratinocytes and lowered MMP-1 production in fibroblasts exposed to UV-stressed media. In the clinical arm, this translated into better maintenance of moisture and wrinkle depth compared to placebo.

How Environmental Stress Impacts Your Skin

    Photoaging
    & Wrinkles

Repeated UV exposure accelerates collagen breakdown, leading to deeper wrinkles and loss of elasticity on frequently exposed areas like the face

    Inflammation & Sensitivity

UVB triggers inflammatory cytokines in skin cells, which can keep the skin in a low-grade inflammatory state – showing up as redness, irritation and a “weathered” look over time.

    Dryness & Texture Changes

Sun and environmental stress disrupt the barrier, increasing water loss and leaving skin drier, rougher and more prone to fine lines.

    and How Astaxanthin Fights Back.

    Helps Neutralise UV-Triggered
    Inflammation

Astaxanthin reduced UVB-induced inflammatory cytokine release in keratinocytes and helped keep pro-inflammatory IL-1α levels from rising in the high-dose clinical group, supporting calmer, less reactive skin.

    Supports Collagen & Wrinkle Maintenance

By lowering UV-linked inflammatory signalling and MMP-1 production, astaxanthin helps defend collagen from accelerated breakdown, so wrinkle depth and elasticity stay more stable over time.

Helps Preserve Moisture Under Environmental Stress

While the placebo group experienced a significant drop in skin moisture over 16 weeks, moisture levels in the astaxanthin groups remained comparatively steady, suggesting better protection against UV- and dryness-related deterioration.

Clinically studied antioxidant support for skin that stays more resilient against everyday sun and environmental stress.

    Key Takeaway

Your skin cannot avoid light and weather, but it can be better prepared for them. Daily astaxanthin helps defend against UV-linked oxidative stress and inflammation, supporting smoother, better-hydrated skin that shows fewer signs of sun-driven deterioration over time.
