Skin Texture & Moisture
Astaxanthin: Astaxanthin and tocotrienol are two powerful antioxidants that work in slightly different ways, which makes them a strong pair for “beauty from within” support. A clinical study in winter conditions looked at how this combination could improve texture, moisture and overall skin quality from the inside out.

Science + Skin Transformation
Overview
In a four-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 16 women with dry skin (around 40 years old) took a softgel once daily in the evening. Each capsule provided 2 mg astaxanthin + 40 mg tocotrienol or placebo oil.
Skin was evaluated at baseline, Week 2 and Week 4 using:
- Participant self-assessments
- Expert visual and tactile assessments
- Instrument measurements of stratum corneum moisture and sebum levels
The study ran through mid-winter, a time when dryness and roughness usually worsen, which makes improvements harder to achieve.

The Study Focus
Researchers wanted to understand whether daily oral intake of this antioxidant blend could:
- Improve surface smoothness and moisture
- Help maintain elasticity and overall texture
-
Support skin condition under harsh, drying environmental conditions
What Happens to Texture & Moisture in Winter
Dry air + indoor heating
Colder months and heated interiors pull water out of the stratum corneum, leaving skin feeling tight, rough and more lined.
Oxidative stress
UV exposure, pollution and internal stress can disrupt lipids and proteins in the outer skin layers, which affects smoothness and glow.
Age-related changes
With time, the skin’s ability to retain moisture and maintain a fine, even texture naturally declines, especially in those already prone to dryness.
What the Study Found
Moisture levels improved despite dry conditions
Electrical measurements showed a significant increase in moisture at the outer eye area in the supplement group after four weeks, while the placebo group trended downward. The difference between groups at Week 4 was statistically significant
Texture, smoothness and elasticity scored better
Expert assessment recorded clear improvements in smoothness, moistness and elasticity in the active group compared with placebo, with several parameters reaching statistical significance by Week 4.
Skin was better maintained than placebo
Sebum levels stayed more stable in the active group, while the placebo group showed declines, suggesting that overall skin condition was better preserved when astaxanthin and tocotrienol were taken daily.
